ive been playing bass on and off for the last 4 years and i am yet to learn a technique to create brilliant riffs and hooklines and seem only to copy the guitarist and/or the root of the chord any ideas on what i could do or practise to be able to create them

My teacher has me doing exercises where I play the different chords in a scale using different notes in the bass. For example, play root, 3,5,7, then have the 3 in the bass,(3,5,7,root), then the 5 etc. She said it was very important to get away from the habit of always playing the root first. After a while your ears will begin to hear the same chord in different ways.
