Okay, so for my graduation project I am playing an acoustic set along with a friend of mine on guitar to a nursing home.

So its in two weeks and the songs he picked out arent really meant for bass. He picked a bunch of rediculously challenging finger picking songs that he recorded and sent to me and wants me to learn them. Its really hard to have to make up a bass line to these types of songs and its gotten me extremely frustrated. What do you think i should do?

There is always room for a bassline in every song. You don't have to follow him, maybe just accent certain phrases or notes? That might work.

Never give surrender to the guitards, there is always room for us bassists

work around him or play steady eights on the changes, my guitarists fill up alot of space so i've learnt to harmonize there lines and just kinda lope around there playing with fill.s

Take it easy on yourself.

Just follow his chord changes with the tonic note of the same chord. If he plays a Cmaj7-13 (whatever the heck that is) just play the C.

When he changes to a Dm play a D.

Etc., etc.

Practice until you can play that way very smoothly. From there you can start adding notes or just leave it the way it is. It will sound fine.

When I was a teenager, I would visit my granny in the nursing home, and bring along my classical guitar. I had a song book (I forget the name... some thing like "Every Song Ever Written- with charts") and would play old (30's and 40's)popular tunes out of it like "Roll Out the Barrel" , "bycycle build for Two", and such stuff. The would sing along and had a great time.

As for the playing: Just stick to the root. Play bass and let the guitarist worry about his technique. Play bass.
