does anyone employ the alexander technique? curious because just reading about it has made me more mindful of items less considered while practicing and playing. items such as posture and what muscles tense when, among other things.

psychophysical growth in bass playing. it's really opened up a whole new can of worms for me. i'm curious to find out if anyone has employed this technique and what it's done for them.

I haven't used it, but P. McCartney famously has!

I haven't heard of this technique, can you add a link or a little more info?

it's a practice of undoing all of the negative habits we have learned. largely intriguing how the body is connected to itself, with one element affecting another.

for example one thing that i learned was that if, while playing, i made a large move up the fretboard (toward the bridge) with my left hand moving from a major shape to a minor shape (regardless of if i was using those tonalities or not), than my left fore arm would tighten, my left shoulder would tighten, my neck would tighten up, and my lower back would lose it's posture. my head would also drop and my breathing would be restricted. thus being aware of this i slowed my practice down and have now come to terms with the motion and, at least, i now am a bit more relaxed with the motion and still breath while making the leap. quite fascinating.

here's some information on it. i highly recommend reading about Mr. Alexander as well and talking to someone about it.

Their's a DB guy over on the DB side that is an AT instructor:

Don Higdon
http://www.dhigdon.com/

I think one could benefit a lot from it, although I've only barely been exposed to it by someone who took a class (the "lying on the table with books under the head" thing). From reading about it it sounds like it's a pretty life-changing thing for many.
