only alternative tuning I've heard about is for 5 strings, sry. I'll still tell you about it, you might figure out something for 6 string in the same vein.

instead of b-e-a-d-g you'd have e-a-d-g-c

I would use the altered tuning that works for the sound you want. What is the purpose of using an altered tuning?

Michael Manring is the king of altered tunings. Check out http://www.manthing.com. He has a whole page of altered tunings. They are 4 string tunings though.

Michael Hedges used a lot of altered tunings. He was a guitarist, but I don't think that matters.

Read this article:
http://www.zonguitars.com/zonguitars...ed_tuning.html

Tune the strings to make them sound the way you want them to sound. Try different intervals between your strings. I don't think anyone can give you a list of tunings to create what you already have in your head.

...just a punitive fleeting list. Really, there's any infinite number. The only way you can find what suits "alternate" for you is simply to try a bunch of different tunings.

When using a six in my band, I like to use-

AEADGF#B.... But I play metal-ish kind of stuff.

I briefly used A-E-B-F#-C#-E, but it was impossible to switch between that and standard tuning as I had to use a completely different set of strings. This is Robert Fripp 'new standard tuning' but a step and a half (and an octave) lower. I didn't like the weirdness of the feel, the low A is very floppy and the high E is extremely taught. The only reason it really worked on mine is because I have a faux-36" scale (but was able to put the high E at around 33"). Good luck -- this one creates a lot of interesting possibilities.

New standard tuning is 5th tuning... I hate when people say that as theres nothing really "new" about it... oh well, props to Frip I guess...
