Alternative way of muting in slap

does anybody else mute by slapping a string but instead of bouncing off with your thum you keep the string down, it kinda gives the same sound as when i mute by resting my fingers on top of the string. I only use this method if my hand is in to much of a wierd position to mute normally. Is this common?
