I've seen basses (although not the best, but still decent enough) on Ebay for as low as 10 bones....if you can't afford a 10 dollar bass, go cut your neighbors grass and earn, baby!

People who are commenting on my comment about chords... I know that. I listen to Jaco and Vic and love their music. But if I had said something like "If you have a decent amp and bass and play with finesse, bass chords sound great." then I would had to explain what finesse is and what qualifies as decent gear to do such a thing. It was somewhere around 4 in the morning, I didn't want to do that. Basically, a bass chord played by Marc Hoppus will sound like crap. If this guy is into punk and Blink-182, he's going to be play a fretted p-bass with roundwounds and using a pick.

i gotta agree with whoever mentioned Rancid.. go get yourself some old Operation Ivy and hear what Matt Freeman was doing back in the day.. makes Mark Hoppus look like a little girl... oh wait, he does that just fine by himself...

If bassists don't use chords, what are they supposed to plug into their amp?

It takes less than 10 seconds for your hands to gain the Technique in chords, Chords are easy, they sound nice (Almost always)

Chords are Just as easy to make "Sound Right" as it is to adjust to a Dingwall...

Well, think of a harmonic yeh. but then think of a chord. Think of them both together- then boom!!!

BTW keep the acoustic, just save up for a new bass. Then learn some good songs. Blink 182 arent the most 'challenging ' of songs are they?

Guitar takes a long time to learn and a short time to master.

Bass takes little time to learn and can never be fully mastered. You can get to a certain point where it is unlikely you will proceed any furthur, but it is still possible.

well, first up, this doesn't belong in basses, so i'll move it on over to technique.

secondly, just like anything, chords sound better when you practice them, and can sound just fine on bass, even a p-bass with a pick .

lastly, if this guy likes mark hoppus enough to start playing bass, good for him! that's great, whatever it takes to get him to pick up an instrument. i doubt there's anyone here who only likes the first music that got them to want to play, and the case will be the same for this new guy.

let's play nice.

Also, how old are you?
I play a lot of chords o_0... Well, they're usually on the upper frets, or harmonic ones.. Either way... Nyah!

Smile No, you aren't a freak.

When I started playing, I made up the stupidest sh*t. I played the bass for two years, and then a friend of mine bought me a 6 string. I started playing it like a bass, you know with my fingers. Everyone talked a lot of crap until I got good at it, and then the all wanted me to show them how. It is really hard, but its fun. I haven't played my 6 string for a long time now. I don't really like it, I love the bass. I gave the guitar to my big bro, and now he is learning how to play it like I was. So, if you are a freak, then I'm a freak, because I used to do the same thing.

Later
