I find when jamming I usually don't pop very often, just little accents here and there to go along with my drummers cymbals. But typically I like to just double thumb (I don't pop the string hard on the upstroke) with with a few percussive clicks int here for flavor.

DO you need to learn how to use it? I think so every combination of techniques (slap and pop are two different techs imo) produces different sounds that are appropriate when ever the you decide their appropriate.

i mean i "slap" same thumb movement

but with the hard bit instead of poping, so i do that on the D/G/C strings

so i slap normally then for "popping" switch to my hard thumb thingy lol

I don't think it's weird at all. I do way more slapping than popping as well and I'm a funker!

i usually split slap/pop and regular fingerpicking about 50%. im not the best popper, i tend to end up with my hand about 4-5 inched away from the fretboard, but i like the sounds of them both. i usually pop the octave, nothing more than that and have a funky slap line underneath

I've never popped or slapped...I admire the ones that can and do it tastefully.
