Amazing influence of band dynamics

During home practice I usually stay away from the G-string as I simply hate its 'sharp' sound compared to the mellower sound of the other strings. During live play over the weekend I reluctantly played notes from this string (softer, as I did not trust its sound) and great was my amazement when I heard it in band context - it just sounded wonderful and I was playing it full-strength within minutes - eventually I could not wait for the next opportunity to use the G-string!

Did you guys have similar experiences on this - or other - strings (or other effects)?

i like a low-mid heavy sound and usually have my high mids and treble flat or rolled off a little when practicing at home. however when playing in my loud rock band i find i tend to roll the tone knob and/or some of the higher frequencies back up a bit in order to cut through a little better and get some more clarity.

playing with a full band also reminds me to do less goofy fills and that some good old driving 8ths can be awesome during transitions
