So, "You Can't Hold No Groove" has kind of always been on the back of my mind as a song I want to learn in its entirety, not just the basic groove of, if that makes sense.
Now that I'm sort delving more into it, I realize that the actual
groove of the song is what's giving me the most trouble.
The way I understand it, there's no one "right" way to play the main motive within the song (the D-F-G-F-G-G-F bit), and I'm good with that. I play it this way:
D thumb-upstroke
F hammer
G index pluck
F thumb-upstroke
G thumb-upstroke
G thumb-downstroke
F thumb-upstroke
Good?
Now, the bit that's giving me trouble is the muted thumps in between that lick and the chords and then between the chords back to that lick.
I have the official music as written out by Victor himself and there's straight sixteenth percussive thumps going on, but that's not what it sounds like to me? And even if that is correct, there's no indicators as to how he plays that (obviously he doesn't do it all with his thumb..or does he?).
Considering some of these flurries of percussive thumps consist of two muted notes on the G-string followed by two on the E-string, it's a bit of a stretch, and I can't alternate between thumb and index finger.
So, any suggestions on how to better tackle this song?
