Any Gary Willis Students? 2 Notes Per String Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Guys,

Just wondering if there are any Gary Willis students about. I've been working on learning his 3 finger right hand technique, so far I'm making pretty good progress.

My question is did he ever address playing 2 note per string shapes in his lessons?

I'm doing well using both open/closed positions etc but I haven't seen anywhere where he addresses this.

Now I thought that maybe you could do this for a let's say A Pentatonic scale.

Note---Playing Finger---Muting Finger

A-----------Index----------Middle
C-----------Middle---------Thumb
D-----------Ring-----------Index
E-----------Index----------Middle
G-----------Ring-----------Index
A-----------Index----------Middle

I like this because it puts you in open position when you're done.

Anyone else have any other and better ways of doing this?

Thanks.

Hey henry,

I studied with Gary for just over a year in Barcelona. Unfortunately we didn't ever talk about his right hand technique so I can't help you there. If you have any other questions about his approach though give me a shout.

Have you tried asking him directly? He used to have an 'Ask Willis' section on his website where people could post up questions... maybe check his site and see if it's still up there.

Incidentally he loves pentatonics!

Ez man,

Scott.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the response, I did ask send in a question to the Ask Willis section but he's already responded to me once on something else, lol I'm not sure I'll get lucky a second time around.

He sure does love pentatonics, I'm working my way through his solo on "Canine" and they're everywhere.

Some of those runs in that solo to are tough play at tempo, ugh lol.
