Anybody ever break picks?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was playing this morning and my third pick in a month broke. Has anybody else had this?

I use Fender Heavy.

Also, I keep my picks in a little jar and randomly pick one out if i want a shred. So its not like Ive had a "main pick" and beating the hell out of it.

do you pick right at the bridge a lot? if so - there is your answer. that far back, the lateral tension on the string is higher, due to it having less side to side movement ...

personally i have sliced into thin (.50) picks with the high E on a guitar before, but never snapped a medium / med. thick (.88 - 1.2) pick on a bass ... but i always use dunlop tortex or pickboy carbon nylon or hi graphites ...

I used to use and good luck with the Tortex picks as well. But as my fingerstyle playing grew into something useful as I grew older and bored with just banging away with a pick I needed to find something that allowed me to do both.

While out as a support act with NightRanger back in the 80's, bassist Jack Blades turned me onto a killer way to do both. It is a Flat Thumb pick hybrid gizmo made by Herco and it comes in the std. thicknesses. I prefer the Heavy. It wears down but doesn't break. And I can still use my four fingers for fingerstyle while picking away . As the years went on, I have developed more of a "banjo-ish" ability to play four fingered and with a pick on the thumb at the same time.

But for me it was a great way to be able to switch between styles without having to reach for a pick or to put a pick down. I can switch while playing.

Hard to find them but google "Herco Flat Thmb Pick" and you'll see several places that sell them. Yes, they are much more expensive than a Fender pick, but they last tons longer.

I used to use .73 glassy plastic picks, and I'd break 'em in about 2 weeks.

i dont think ive ever broken a pick before, but to be fair i lose them often and dont have super high tension on my strings. im using triangley 0.73mm dunlop tortex ones.

also ! kieth, ive been looking for something like that to try as i like switching style, sometime in the middle of songs (ive been using the 'holding pick in my teeth' method) might order some. cheers.

I've broken picks before, only ever Fender ones though. They are actually pretty fragile compared to most other picks.

When I play with a pick all that gets broken are my strings. . I've never heard of breaking picks until now. Crazy.

I've broken picks many times, mostly playing guitar. Had my E-string get caught in a crack in one once while soloing. That was embarassing. I don't use one on bass very much.

i break picks all the time, i use 1mm, i like to bang on the strings so the pick just breaks from repeated bending back and forth from the force of me hitting the strings.

I use 3 and 4 millimeter dunlop picks, snap them regularly.

Yeah, I use the pink plastic dunlop picks (.73mm i think). They break every once in a while when I play heavy or fast chords.

Sometimes I'll also use some ond really thin picks I have laying around, they break a lot more often.

If you have more pick breakage than you think you should, change you pick grip. Move you fingers back some, farther from th estrings, to let the pick flex more.

I use the dunlop tortex 0.88 picks, the last one lasted 6 months before the tip was too worn to play with, never broken one yet.

The only picks I have ever broken are the Fender picks, I think its because what they are made out of. However, when playing a show I do like to use a new pick for every song, just a kind of superstition/routine.

Never. I didn't even know one could do such a thing. How hard do you have to play to accomplish that? I use Dunlop kinda heavy ones (1 - 3 mm, but mostly around 1.5) by the way. The ones with the crock face on them.

DAVA Control picks. No breaks and they don't seem to wear down as quickly as Dunlops.

I don't break picks, but these have the sharpest attack and most rigidity/toughness I have found yet. They somehow sound more "richer" than the rest too.

Carbon/nylon:

I use the .88's, and they're black.

Ebay: "Carbon picks" in musical instruments.

only crappy Fender pics. Otherwise, I saw through Dunlop Nylons, or jagged-edge Dunlop Tortex.
