I saw Steve Earle a month back and his long time bass player used it on a song. It was to make an uprightish bow effect which was cool, first time I have seen it used with a bass.

Michael Manring does awesome things with them.
I used one for a while to get cello-like tones. It's pretty tricky on bass because strings take a while to start moving and you can't rest the device on adjacent strings.
I got pretty good with it and developped a strategy of hammering the notes I wanted.
I stopped using it when I got into synth pedals and didn't look back.

+1

I also had fun experimenting with harmonics and feedback with it too. Drove the sound guy nuts. lol I stopped using mine when my fretless got stolen from my church. It's still cool on a fretted bass, but it just doesn't sound the same / as good.

I have tried a bit, trying to emulate a bow on electric bass. Veery tough to get the strings moving initially. I used the top of my thumbnail to get the string vibrating a bit before lowering the e-bow into place. Cool tone when it works, but in the end I gave it to my guitarist.
