Anyone Inspired by a Non-Musician?

Didn't know where to put this. Quentin Tarantino is a huge inspiration to me. His movies are so crazy... after seeing a few I wanted to write music like his movies; crazy, inventive, fun. Any others?

Yes I am inspired by non-musicians.
  • Henry Moore's Sculptures (I wrote a piece based on one of his public artworks in Toronto as my final composition project in University)
  • Poetry (particularly one friend of mine who writes the best songs, I have set two to music with her permission)
  • Watching my dogs play in the park

Limiting who or what inspires me limits my voice...

Being from around Pittsburgh I have to smirk at this, you like playing badly? I really don't care at all about sports.

The hot chicks that would never look at me in a million years unless I was in a band always inspired me until I got married. But now, it's people like Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington inspire me. I love collecting their pictures

Frank Lloyd Wright

Richard Pryor

(to name a few)

They make me want to be better at anything/everything I do. If I could do anything half as good as how they did their thing...

My thought was plays great until the last song, plays in outstanding time through that song with inventive licks, pushing the envelope and then flubs the last note... I kid, though, he's a great player.

My compositions and general musical aesthetic have been inspired by:

Italo Calvino (fiction)
ee cummings (poetry)
Robert Smithson (sculpture/environmental art)
Elizabeth Streb (dance/movement)
Alexander Calder (mobil)
Frank Lloyd Wright (architecture)
Daniel Dennet (cognitive sciences/philosophy)

Arguably I've also been inspired by Woody Allen, S.E.Hinton, and the editors of The National Lampoon, seeing as I spent so many of my formative years reading their works.

Everything inspires me. I remember a quote by John Cage where he said something like "Whenever I hear something that I hate, I try to figure out why I hate it, and than I figure out a way to love it. Than there's a bit less hate in the world and more love, and the world is much more beautiful without hate". Not the exact quote, but it goes along those lines.

I try to apply that sort of philosophy to everything in life, and it really has given me a limitless well to draw inspiration from.
