I can get all sorts of odd noises and effects out of a bass... It depends on the particular bass and strings, but yeah, just mess around and think outside the box and you'll be amazed at what you can come up with for fun.

You can do pretty much the same thing if you have some kind of slide, a tremolo, and some distortion.

Basically you can make a lot of crazy sounds with different effects.

Oh, take your friends bass and slam into at least 6 pieces. Then tell him jesus loves him and give him a hug. Let me know how that goes.

On the video, As much as I want to say that vid was stupid, it wasn't. I am amazed that he got those noises from his gear.

Bravo.

Bass noises? They are long but wait till the end of each for some crazy sounds.
try http://www.myspace.com/auditoryfecalflinger
the first song is an Electric EUB and a sax. 1 take on each.
second song is an electric bass and a sax 1 take each. Thats what happens when I get board at the age of 16 and you are listening to minimal music.

I make something that I call a sonar sound (which is obviously a rather bad name since sonar generally operate with infra- or ultrasonic sounds if I recall correctly) by pulling the g-string off the side of the fretboard, and then towards my body so that the edge of the neck pickup acts as a fret. From there I pluck the string and use quite a lot of vibrato. This is done on an Ibanez SR, but should be possible with any bass with a soapbar neck pickup, perhaps even with other pickups. Anyway, a bit difficult to explain, but you can hear it at the end of the song Clear Blue here:

OMG these "kids" think this is all new? Eddie Van-halen was making the "elephant" noise WAY back in the day, Sammy Hagar was doing the gear change with the Montrose band.
Sad thing is, my drummer had me listen to Dragon Force.....they are one of those technical bands.....Dream theater type wanna be bands...they are good, but after watching that......hmm...

I'm sure it's all tongue and cheek and Herman Li doesn't seriously claim to invent a lot of those sounds. It's cool that he's willing to share with people how he does them as I'm not a fan of keeping techniques to oneself as trade secrets. He's also an inspiration to me as a player since like him I'm lefthanded and play righty. He easily shows that you can get as technical and fast as any righty who plays a righty guitar, so whenever I have trouble getting up to speed on a difficult passage I try not to get into a rut and use the excuse, "It's because I'm a lefty." I just think, "If Herman Li can do THAT, then I should be able to do this!" and practice harder.

I've seen this awhile ago and got quite a kick out of it since I do like DragonForce. I don't think I'd compare them to Dream Theater as they're heavily inspired from power metal and don't take themselves that seriously at all. C'mon. They sing about dragons and knights and list "Signature Stage Moves" like "Hands free booze drinking" and "360degree tornado jump."

HERMAN REEEEEEEE

(I'm asian, I can make fun of asians.)

And I agree with Traver. Dragonforce can't replicate their studio sound AT ALL live. Still a good band, and I'm still trying to get through their song on Guitar Hero 3.

My best trick is paying the mortgage with the bass. Didn't always pull it off in the old days.

Remember that clip when Krist Novoselic flung his bass up into the air, lost it in the lights, and knocked himself out? Laying onstage, Cobain comes over and kicks him... IIRC....

That was a great band.
