Anyone use a SlapRing?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys.

I am a big fan of speed slappers like Mark King.

He uses a metal ring on his thumb to get a more percussive tone out of his slapping. I decided to convert a metal thumb plectrum to become a slapring.

I started using it and i loved it! The best thing about it is that slapping on the A string is far far more defined then if i used my bare thumb. Its louder and sits in the mix better.

Does anyone else here use Slap rings and would you fork out money for a decent one? I was thinking of getting a gerald reece one from here. http://www.slapring.de/en/productinf...ring/index.php

Have they been a gimmick to you or an invaluable tool?

Cheers! Rob.

That sounds like a cool idea to me, but I'd rather hear what other people have to say before spending 30 bones on one. Does your converted plectrum just make the sound louder or does it change the tone as well? I'm gonna have to see if I can find any junk lying around work I can try this with...

I saw a guy this weekend at the Jazz Jubilee (Sacto) using one on his pinky and smacking the living daylights out of an old beatup upright.

Very cool sound.

Mark King's ring isn't made of metal!!!!

He makes em out of duck tape, heh..
My brother has gotten a couple witch Mark have "given"/trown to him after concerts and we found to our suprise that they are made of duck tape, and he makes a new one for every concert! he trow em our after playing a concert!

And he does it to protect his thump, not to get anorter sound

Yes, Mark king used tape. I own both the slap ring and the instructional video... what can I say? If you use thin strings (030) it really helps you when you play on them with your thumb. It also helps with speed as (at least for me) giving a bit of extra weight to the thumb helps you throwing it back and forth. Never really studied the videos, I must say.
