Is This An Average Technique?

I'm sort of new to bass, and I rest my thumb on the string above the one I'm playing, instead of it being planted on the pickup. Is that normal? When I look at various covers, I only see 1/50 do that.

Yes, it's resting AND muting...
Two birds with one stone, I do it all the time

it's perfectly normal to do that. the whole 'rest your thumb on the pickup' thing is more to do with if there isn't a string lower than the one your playing on, so basically the low E (or B on a five string).

you move about as is necessary.

I think it's the better technique compared the thumb-on-pickup style of playing, which i use.

I use my ring and pinky to mute the lower strings instead.

Same!

In addition to playing bass, I also use my index to click "Move Thread" on my special super-moderator button!

Moved to Technique!

It's definitely not right if you're using a pick.

That would be floating thumb technique, and a good one to use.
