avoiding the "CLACK" sound

I know slapping on a frettles isn't the favorite way to do it, but is there any way to avoid the "CLACK" sound. If this unpleasant sound were removed I think slapping on a frettless would be seen in a more favorable light.

EQ maybe? Isn't the 'clack' the sound of string hitting fretboard, ergo the problem with slap on fretless?

Indeed. You can't really avoid the sound, unless you take out all the highs, or the string doesn't hit the fingerboard (which obviously means you won't get a slap sound in the first place).

The slap sound on a fretted bass is the metal string hitting the metal fret/s. Obviously you can't get this on a fretless.

Watch Primus' vid of My Name is Mud as I'm pretty sure he's playing a fretless and might be getting a similar sound to what you're looking for.
