So anyone else straddle the dropped-tuning vs. five-string debate by tuning the second (or in the case of a four-string, first) string to the dropped note in question, then going in fourths from there? I feels like it bails me out of being pidgin-holed into playing in dropped tining, and I can get a whole octave and a fourth below the Guitarists. Also, you don't have to deal with widely uneven string tensions or buy a specialty set, use a specialty bass, etc.

Unless you're really into barre bass chords, dropped tunings seem a little cumbersome on the bass, an instrument already more cumbersome to riff on than a guitar.
