Bad Habbit?

Sign in to disble this ad
ok so when i play i use my thumb to mute E and A strings.. my question is i find it ALOT easier to then play with my thumb instead of my fingers on some songs.. i do this even more if i am playing the D and G strings.. is this a bad habbit?

G:---------------2-1------|
D:--0-0-3-2---0------3---|
A:----------3------------3-|
E:--------------------------|

so both A's would be done using my thumb..

Yeah, sounds weird. And I'm somebody who believes that 'whatever works' is probably okay. Do you play your bass down by your knees? Is your thumb six inches long? I can't imagine how this is better than fretting with your fingers. I can see 'maybe' fretting the low E string in certain circumstances, but not the A string. I just can't see how the thumb would be preferred over a regular finger on the A.

The finger that fretted the 3rd fret on the D string should still be right there at the ready, so use the same finger on the A string. That's more efficient than using your thumb.

Are you fretting with your thumb or plucking? If you're using your thumb to pluck the string, do what works for you. I started a similar thread a few days ago, and the feedback was 100% OK to mix in the thumb in fingerstyle.

I use my thumb in a similar fashion. Works for me. I find for octave jumps it's easier. Also it helps when playing chord/melody stuff. At times I even alternate between thumb, index, or thumb, middle, similar to Dominique Di Piazza. Thumb+fingers rules.

because if i do it this way i can mute my A when needed and also the E at the same time.. i dunno.. i just thought it might be weird.. and i only do it on some songs.. others i seem to be fine with its just when there is more attention on the D and G strings i seem to do this.
