Hi,

Has anyone played bass for a Bluegrass Band?
Amplification is a single ribbon mike. Any tips on volume?

Thanks in advance.

Never mind about the shared mike. Bring your own amp event BYOA.

I used an ABG through a Polytone amp I would set the volume as appropriate for vocals banjo and guitars through the PA, or acoustically if only one mic was used. So... go for upright bass volume.

As a matter of fact, I play for a group that does southern gospel and bluegrass gospel. For the bluegrass pieces, I put flats on my J-bass, take a lot of the mids out on my amp, back off on the blend knob and amp volume, and learned some fretboard muting techniques from my bass instructor that are pretty effective. I don't get a pure doghouse bass sound, but it's close enough to blend in pretty well.
