Bass Chord Resource?

Sign in to disble this ad
Is there a site that anyone knows of that has all the bass chords listed? A Bass Chord Chart is you will

I only know a few chords that I've picked up here and there and I'd like to learn a bit more to liven up some songs.

Wow Bryan

Excellent resource.

There's some hand shapes there for the 5 that I've never seen outside of my personal pedagogy. Way to include the inversions!

BTW anyone who's every tried to learn Dominique DiPiazza's Maria would benefit from studying Bryan's charts.

Thanks- they took me a bit and may not be for everyone (I used the voicings that made the most sense to me, and left out fingerings that I found too difficult), but I'm glad that some have found a use for them.

I haven't seen and studied them all yet, but, Thanks Bryan.

So comprehensive in the listing of the component notes. Colour coded. And inversions too. Excellent.

It makes learning a pleasure instead of a duty.

I recently started playing the six string, having made the jump from the four string. One of my motivations for having the extended range was to have more options and clarity for playing chords. So, I've started diving back into chord analysis, including inversions, and your charts will be very helpful.

Thanks for sharing some of the fruit of your labors!

Just a quick word.

If you want to play chords on the bass, check out the greats doing so today:

Oteil Burbridge
Dominique DiPiazza
Janek Gwizdala

These guys are like the Stanley and Jaco of our days.

Janek and Dominique are two of my favorites- I've pretty much worn out my Front Page album, and I've recently started listening to Oteil again- his tone is much more appealing to me as of late. I don't know if it's the switch to the Fodera or just him maturing, but I've got a BETJ Studio Jams episode with him on it that's just fantastic. Matt Garrison is also a great chordal player, although the bass chording falls a little too much into the background on a lot of the tunes on his solo albums. If Bill Dickens ever gets his album out I imagine that there'll be some nice chordal stuff on there as well.

Pat Metheny on the bass guitar!

Nice false harmonics, too.

Oh yeah. Otiel went through a big spiritual discovery period lately. That and using ampeg amps seem to have opened up his sound more than even the Fodera. Cat would sound great on anything! However, his playing with Bruce Hampton still today touches me in ways that very little bass playing since Jaco has. What a beautiful and earnest human being, even without the skull crushing bass playing!

Noob question,

I'm using a 5 string bass with standard tuning (BEADG). Can I still use Bryan's chart?
Another noob question, what does inversion mean?

Thank you for bearing with me.

EDIT:
Whoooppssss... this is a classic example of "look around before you ask around".
Download the video, and it's all crystal clear.

Thank you Bryan for the instructions!

No problem. I don't think I mentioned it in the vid, but inversions are chords played with other parts of the chord as the root (first inversiion is the 3rd of a chord used as the root, second inversion you play the 5th of the chord as the root, etc.).
