Bass Guitar Methods

I learned to play the upright bass using the Simandl method. The book helped me a lot and I still use exercises from it. I was wondering if there was something like this for the bass guitar. I'm also talking about real method books, not Hal Leonard "How to Play Bass Guitar". Have any professionals actually written method books for the bass guitar?

All I've been able to find there is Hal Leonard-style books, or partial-technique books. I'm looking for a full-on approach to the instrument, like Simandl is to the upright bass.

This might be along the lines of what you are looking for. A lot of it is broken down into playing in each position. Scales, arpeggios, rhythm studies. No tab so it's my go to book on the rare occasion I get a stick up my back side about practicing reading.

Keep in mind that all I know of Franz Simandl is what wikipedia has just told me, so YMMV, caveat emptor, and so on.
