Bass height change when shifting between fingering & picking

I'm curious how others have handled this:

I'm someone who shifts between picking and fingering depending upon the song, the tone I'm seeking, and sometimes even just to change things up for myself.

My challenge is that if I wear my bass at the most comfortable height for fingering, it's a bit low to get a comfortable arm position and wrist angle for picking. If I shorten my bass strap to reach the most comfortable height for picking, the switchover to fingerstyle feels like my right elbow is sticking out awkwardly and my right wrist and shoulder fatigue more quickly.

The height difference can't be more than 2 inches, but it's enough that I just can't seem to find a comfortable medium position.

What's a bassist who likes it both ways (ahem) to do?

For me the difference to switch between finger style and pick is simply a rotation of the bass so the neck is lower and the bridge end of the bass is higher for picking and vice versa for finger style.

YMMV.

Yeah, I too seem to have a height issue with this, I haven't found the perfect height though... mostly because I do care of the way I look while picking (I think that to look cool picking it has to be low, otherwise you look weird)

I switch back and forth all the time and never had this problem. Is it possible that one or both of your techniques are off kilter a little?

Try this: sit in a chair with your right arm flat on a desk. Curve your fingers naturally as if you're playing. Then hold your wrist and arm steady and put your index finger and thumb together as if holding a pick. The difference in reach should only be about an inch at most, easily compensated for by straightening your elbow just a little.

Basically your A string while picking requires the same arm angle as your G string while fingering. Sounds to me like your elbow or wrist might be too stiff.
