but if youre talking about playing regular bass parts but as the sole instrument. well thats better.

however, bass is an instrument designed to be played in a collective.
Bass is whatever I decide it will be when I'm playing it.

An old Jazz standard comes to mind.
FEVER, has been done really well with DB and female vocalist.

Bass player "Lydia on Bass", does it all the time on YouTube. Here is just the first video I pulled as an example.

Edit: realized this one has a drum track on it, but you get the point. She is pretty cool!!

Suprised this guy wasn't mentioned. He's surely a Monster player and sings (though I don't care for the vocals)

Seriously, it's been 37 years since Portrait of Tracy and School Days, 50 years since The Village Vanguard Sessions, 70+ years since Jimmy Blanton and 200 years since Dragonetti and we're still worried about bass as a solo instrument? Next we'll be wondering whether Rock and Roll is here to stay!

Listen to any song where James Jamerson is playing. He played solo bass all the time but within context of the song. Pure Genious IMO.

Christian McBride plays a great accompaniment to a singer named Dana Lauren playing "On the Sunny Side of the Street." I heard this on the radio then had to buy it on iTunes. I accompany my young daughters when they sing this song. Very fun to play.

I've never been big on the solo 6 stringers I've seen but then I'm not a modern jazz guy which is what it sounds like to me.

Anyway, I know this isn't exactly what you had in mind but I've been tempted to get the Fishman Powerchord pedal just to jam with only a drummer and cover bands like the Black Keys and White Stripes. Stupid non-bass-player-having bands.

Electric bass isn't very convenient to use as a solo instrument.
It is thought to be monophonic, it has that huge phat tone and is so far away from the human voice that it can provide a fundation but no real layer of sound to back up your voice.
It can be done and with talent it can be done well.
I just find it unpractical for such use.
