hey,

I was watching billy sheehan soloing on youtube, and he made a high pitched sound with his bass. im just wondering if anyone knows what he does to make this sound.

I believe it's called *pinch harmonics*. I can do it a bit but can't really explain how.

Pinch Harmonics for the win.

Billy (Sheehan) says he stole this technique from Billy (Gibbons) of ZZ Top.

It's neither of the Billys, but it's a video on how to do it on youtube... Yes, I know it's a guitar instruction video but the concept is the same :-)

yea, definitely a pinch harmonic- it's more a guitar technique because it's easier to execute on the thinner strings with a pick but I guess with some distortion you can do it on bass. the closest I can come is by playing a sort of artificial harmonic where you press your thumb lightly in front of your picking finger, sort of like jaco's technique for the intro to birdland, if you're familiar with that.
