Just don't approach it like a guitarist would. That type of tapping is so cheese.
If you know scales and arpeggios well, that's kind of crucial.
I like this guy's tapping -
‪alan goldstein aghora atmas heave example bass solo tapping‬‏ - YouTube (notice how he uses is LH as a base for these chords and does all the work with his RH... one approach)
My tapping isn't so fancy, but I've managed to slip it into a few recordings-
Left Brain - Solipsism (2010) - 01 - Rivers (river to the infinite) by dr_thunda on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free (almost all tapping)
Left Brain - Solipsism - 05 - Yggdrasil (Animus version) by dr_thunda on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free
Consider which notes you can/would like to sustain. Conversely, releases can create a kind of secondary tone/rhythm pattern (I never really noticed until listening back on recordings). Throw in some slides for variety. Those are my approaches in a nutshell.
The first tapping line I learned was that little "solo" from Dream Theater - Metropolis. It's just some octave stuff basically... easy.
