Hi, I'm a beginner on bass and I can't seem to sound right when I do the hammer-on (is that what it's called?) that's at the beginning of Californication by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers... Any tips..?

all you do is quickly use your index and ring finger or pinky and fret the D then quickly E and back to D with only 1 pluck.

Same sort of problem with same sort of exercise to improve it, you just won't introduce the plucking hand to tap later on. The exercises are the same, they about building hammer on skills and tones. Check out the link and any others like it, there are many, all with great advice and tips.
