Bending strings, and fret wear

Sign in to disble this ad
I don't know when I stopped bending strings on bass (Ibass is the only stringed instrument I play...) but it was a long time ago. I'm not sure why anymore. I *think* I stopped in part because I didn't want to wear down the frets on my bass, and figured that I'd find other techniques to carry my playing. I guess that I have, in that I haven't needed to bend strings. And I've definitely associated "bending strings" with "hard wear on frets".
But lately I've been hearing it in my head sometimes, which means I oughta explore it a bit.
My question - for those of you who bend - how much fretwear does it cause, and is it an issue? Have you needed fretjobs or refret-jobs, and if so, how often?
Or is this a non-issue and I can just unleash my inner BB-on-bass?

Does bending a string put an ever-so-slightly tiny tiny little bit of wear on the frets compared to playing normally? Yes. Does it add up to a hill of beans? No. You get way more fret damage from normal playing than from bending strings. It's not nearly an important enough thing to worry about.

I've had my bass for about three years, and I bend all the time. It seems not to have caused any fret damage, but I haven't had the bass for that long a time.

Roundwounds will do more damage than flats. but frets are re-crownable and replaceable. If you hear it then do it. Don'r worry

I wouldn't worry about the extra wear & tear, it's really minor unless you have very small & soft frets.

Plus as the other poster said, you can get your bass re-fretted.

There would probably be the same amount of wear, except it'd be over a larger area than if you didn't bend at all.
