best way to get into wooten style playing...

Sign in to disble this ad
hi all...
I'm just wondering the best way to get into the wooten style of slapping.. doing the up down thing among others. My slapping style as it stands now is basically Mark King's which is good and all but I'd like to expand my horizons maybe get out of the 80s, as others on the board have mentioned : )

I have toyed with the up down thing ever since I started slapping but unlike Mark Kings style which I picked up a bit quicker and stuck with, I basically dropped any of Victor's licks and tricks. My main problem is that i can never really get into a groove using double thumbing etc... as compared to when I first experimented with King style slapping in a song like love games, which pretty much sounded good right away.

I have noticed there are a few people on the board who seem to have got victors style down pretty well, so I'm just curious how you were able to get into it and make it sound good?

well, now that I am out of school I have time for "aloughtapraktis" what kind of things helped you while practicing his style of playing? My main problem is that I only am able to do little crappy rountines and never really get into the "groove" with double thumbing. I was thinking trying out his video or getting ahold of some of his live shows, anyways I'm off to get a "leaderocola" I try...

Key word looks like "groove".
Wooten didn't come up with this stuff overnight; he is from the 'Old Skool of Groove'. Check out his early influences.
His book w/ Steve Bailey, Bass Extremes, has some double thumbing/thumping info. Wooten's website used to have a lesson or two to get one started, too.

What you need is the Victor Wooten at Bass Day '98 DVD. Wooten explains in some depth the up-down-pluck-pluck and open-hammer-pluck techniques, both during the main presentation and in two additional lessons on the DVD.

It wouldn't hurt to get wooten's transcription book and learn a couple of his songs. But I would advise against getting to entrenched in his work lest you won't be able to get out of it!
