Can anyone recommend a good teaching book for improving bass? I need to unlearn what I know and start again from scratch really. Or any iPhone apps would be good. Cheers!

+ 1. I'd be curious about this too. Probably to do with technique ? A great book IMO is Ed Friedland's "Bass Method". There are three volumes which you can get in one spiral bound edition. Each has it's own CD.

I got taught by two people, one a metal fan who played by ear and one 1950's rock n roller who only knew that style. Taught me a whole bucket load of bad habits, and not much that let's me play naturally. I find it hard to ad lib or use scales as I wasn't taught that way, it was just "play this" and that were it. Need to start again as if I'd never played before, learn from the basics upwards and hopefully learn scales and get confidence to ad lib a little.

Sorry to hear about you bad experiences with previous teachers, but dont let this put you off all teachers. You could consider skype lessons. If so I'm sure there will be lots of recommendations for good teachers.

As well as the book(s) I mentioned in my other post, in the absence of a good teacher, you should check out Online Bass Lessons at StudyBass.com One of the best all 'round sites there is. Start with scales. Get to know them inside and out, then move swiftly onto chords, as this is what a bassist plays 90% of the time, not scales. There are great lessons on scales and chords on that site.

Dont despair. With a little time and effort, you will be on the right road.

Good luck with it.
