Picked up a j-bass with a bridge cover. Couldnt figure it out.

1: which side do you play? (towards neck or opersite)
2: What the hell does it do except look nice shiney.

your first question makes me think that that you got a pickup cover, not a bridge cover, if that is the case, either side is acceptable to play on

and 2.) they originally claimed that it sheilded from interference, but most people don't believe that anymore

Either, depends on what tone you want.

2: What the hell does it do except look nice shiney.

Gets in the way.

TONE. Dude go play right now, you'll hear it, play farther back towards the bridge and then move your right hand while playing the same note, there's a definite tone difference and playing feel

If you meant the Pickup Cover, Use it as a thumb rest and play behind it.
( I love threads that give me a reason to post pics of Black Betty. )

one last thing.
the pick up cover, does it make the sound diffrent? Would have thought so with the sound bouncing off the cover onto the pickups.

(note, Havent actually bought that bass yet, I just "picked it up" to play)

Some will tell you that it sounds "Deeper", some will tell you there is no difference. M, I like to think it sounds different.

I bet there is a minute bit of sound reflecting in there, but in all truth I doubt it makes a humanly noticeable difference

Back when Pickup guards were introduced, they had foam underneathe to help mute the strings when playing.

only the bridge guard, had a palm muting effect. i dont see how they can change the sound. its pickups pickup vibrations not sound. unless it makes a change to the magnetic field but its staionary so using physics i cant see any logical reason it would change the sound.

Back in the day, the pickups were microphonic.

I bought a neck guard being that I play exclusively on the Bridge, when I play on the neck I get too much rattle, although It does seem easier to play.

See previous posts.
-Also, doubles as a great thumbrest.
-Also, covers up a botched file job for the pickups on the PG.
-Also, compliments any other chrome components you may have on your bass.
-Also, makes your Bass look more like a Bass rather than a g***ar, and unique.
-Also, adds weight to the body of your bass to help against neckdive.

i have one for my jazz but i never use it, ill probably put it back on now that its not my main bass...it was just too hard to try and get all the sounds i needed out of it with the cover in the way, but now that i mostly only use it for mellow blues and jazz ill probably put it back on, cuz it looks better than santa carrying a new bass
