Question Bringing out pinch harmonics

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, right now for my lessons at school I am working on a solo arrangement of Body and Soul. Only problem is my teacher is a piano player, not a bassist. I am taking Jazz lessons, so it is more theory based and relating things from piano and such, just no bass technique from the guy. I have all the sections mapped out already and on the second A my teacher wants me to play the melody with harmonics or use harmonics in general and to play either chords or the roots with it. For pinch harmonics, I already can do the Jaco tech for pinch harmonics and usually do them that way. I can do the Steve Bailey method to a certain extent but am new to it. In doing the roots and chords with the melody, Bailey's method is the only way to do so. Thats enough background, I am just looking for some tips, tricks, technique to help bring out the harmonics and make them clear. If need be, I can post some vids. thanks in advance.

Basic things like placing your thumb precisely, plucking near the bridge, and using the bridge pickup.

If you have the money, a piezo pickup gets rid of most of that obnoxious thump when plucking the string. A compressor helps too, but I consider this cheating and the piezo is better anyway.

Piezos would be really nice but as a college student, not really going to happen soon enough. I'd love to have them too just would be hard to install and find a set for my 6 string. I already use a fair amount of compression as well.
Back to harmonics part, the technique I need to use doesn't use the thumb, it uses my index finger. here's an example of the type of solo work and harmonics I am trying to achieve.
