Broke a La Bella 110 E String

Sign in to disble this ad
So last night I broke the E string on my P-bass. It was strung with heavy gauge La Bella "Jamersons" flatwounds, and the E is a 110 gauge. I've always been told I play with a heavy hand, and I do break other strings on other basses fairly often - but heavy gauge flatwounds? I guess I do hit pretty heavy! LOL So now I have to place an order for some more La Bellas...

I used to break E strings often and sometimes other strings but have not for a while now. I even used to order single extra E strings because of it. I guess I don't play as heavy as I used to years ago and also think the strings have gotten better.

Breaking a 110, wow. Maybe you have a sharp spot on your bridge that could smoothed out?.. I have a heavy hand and the only time I've ever snapped a string was tuning. The strings were about 2 years old (I just got the bass), it was the D string. Props though, be happy it didn't hit you in the face.

^ The same exact thing happened too me while I was tuning my Yamaha RBX170 for the 1st time awww memories.

Anyways @ OP:

Where at the bridge where you picking?
I think the burrs or the bridge itself may need to be filed down.

In that case take it to your local shop that way if you mess up you won't void your basses warranty or if it's past the warranty you can try to DIY check out Stewiemac.com 1st though to get some files.

I've broken one string on my bass. I had first gotten my bass used, and was tuning it. Unfortunately, when the CD-ROM I had bought on sale on MF said G was the "highest", I thought it meant highest from the ground. So now I know what happens when a string is tuned 15 semitones beyond it's standard pitch.

Nothings wrong with the bridges on any of my basses- I've had them checked out before. I broke E's and A's all the time on all of my SR-800's, my Gibson Tbirds, and now the Fender. Just found it odd that i managed to break the 100! lol I thought I'd have them on for YEARS!

Does anyone know if La Bella sells individual 110's?

Here you go. A store that sells single LaBella (and other) bass strings.

I have read that some flats don't take to being strung through the body. I guess the sharper break-angle over the bridge is the culprit.
