I'd more call it...tapping IMO. That coordination is some feat just for the cross rhythms involved, never mind the rest of the deal.....wicked stuff

I think you nailed it. I looked on the Chapman Stick site and that method is called tapping.

I just watched this again. Putting aside the whole technique thing, it is amazing the way he has transformed this piece. In the original 1959 version a piano was carrying the underlying rhythm. A sax was carrying the melody. The bass was filling the bottom, but not driving the rhythm. But putting that electric bass in there as the rhythm vehicle he's really given this piece an amazing new feel.
