calluses on my right hand affecting my tone

Sign in to disble this ad
hello, so I've been playing for some time now and my index and middle fingers on my right hand are pretty callused, they almost feel like rubber picks now. I've recently started using my ring finger too and I've noticed that finger produces a much better tone then I can get with my other two fingers because it doesn't have those calluses. Has anyone else had this experience? It's like my hand is punishing me for playing a lot. Is there anything I can do to improve my tone with heavily callused fingers?

I read a tip from a double bassist about using hand lotion to keep their fingers conditioned. The calluses are still obviously there, but it didn't come through in the sound. I've never had overly heavy calluses so I've never done it myself. I suspect lotion would be one of the better solutions to try.

You don't say if you're playing with a band or practising a lot.

My guess is that you're noticing this when practising solo, because if you can notice a difference in tone between calloused and non-calloused fingers when playing along with a drummer and two Marshall half stacks then you are blessed with a truly golden ear.

If it's a real problem to you, then the EQ on your bass or amp should be able to compensate for the sharper attack of harder fingers (you may then find your ring finger sounds 'wooly' in comparison).

But don't do anything to soften or remove those callouses, they'll save you from a lot of pain. I did a 6 hour rehearsal with a band yesterday - playing almost constantly - and, even with well developed callouses, my right hand fingertips are burning this morning. Wear them with pride, you'll need them.
