Ok here is a quick run through using my UX1 and Reaper. Nor perfect but good enough for me.

Took me a couple weeks to get it cleanly to speed. I play most of the written licks, but i try to make it my own. I play the original solos and most of the important stuff.

I've never tried to learn YYZ note for note - I've only fooled around with it on occasion - but I have tried to learn Hemispheres note for note, and if YYZ is anything like Hemispheres then I think the best thing to do is to divide it up into a bunch of different movements, learn each movement one at a time, then slowly marry them up into a coherent whole. A lot of Rush songs are like that - a whole lot of riffs glued together into a song. I learned Open Secrets and Leave That Thing Alone like that.

Yes, since it came out, and also the harder thing, with the groove of the song.

Sometimes the general feel of the song is harder that the actual notes you play.

YYZ is one of those songs that should be banned from being played at music stores - like "no stairway to heaven" in the guitar section, there should be a "no YYZ" in the bass section.

The only YYZ I've ever heard and liked is Geddy Lee's and only he should be legally allowed to play it .

The Steve Morse band recently did a YYZ cover and that guy seemed to be able to play it all the way through (not sure who it was on the recording, it was probably Dave LaRue). Else, only Geddy...

I try to play it on the fretless from time to time and it's good fun (but nothing I'd play for anyone else).

Probably Dave LaRue.

Oh well..I always play it when I try a bass guitar out. It's the only thing I can ever think of playing at music shops whenever I actually go to them.

I wonder if Geddy even plays it note for note.

He definitely doesn't. Plus, I'm pretty sure that these harmonics, although sounding fine, weren't the ones he wanted to play (so it's technically a mistake, but oh well... it's Geddy ).

Speaking of mistakes, check this one out (at least I consider it a mistake).

the second solo is (all in "double-croches", not sure how to say in english...16th notes I think?):

C-A-D-C-A-C-G#-A-B-C-A-C-A-Ab-G (all played on the D and G strings)

now playing it a tempo is close to impossible...

Those runs are overdubs, so I'm sure he was happy with them...

The unison run sounds like sort of a "mild trainwreck" to me. The three instruments are supposed to sound like one, but it doesn't happen. Sounds like a mess since there's no tightness.

If anyone is looking for a solid transcription of YYZ, check out Jammit.com/artist/rush

Learning this one is on my "to do" list for 2013.

Not sure Geddy Lee himself can play it note for note (exactly as recorded) - I've seen "You tube's" of Rush playing this and everyone seems a bit different from the other.

hey theres a book called the rush bass anthology book. YYZ is in there. try to get your hands on that, it'll be worth it.
