Can you "chew" through your thumbnail?

Just finished playing some pretty hard double thumbing on my bass on some rougher strings, but nothing horrid. About midway through, I started to notice some pain underneath my thumbnail, and I looked to see a little black spot... A little frightened, I put crazy glue over the spot in question and let it solidify, creating a bit of a shield. I kept playing, and it kept hurting, but the glue didn't come off, so all good.
What I'm concerned about, if I play on these larger-gauged strings, can the strings "chew" through my thumbnail, or is it like a callous, where it hurts at first, but then the area just toughens up?

anytime you hurt while playing bass, you are doing something wrong. turn up your volume and take it easy on your hands, they're not lizard tails and dont grow back.

I often wonder with some of the techniques I use if I will wear my fingernails away. Sounds like you might need to adjust your technique a little bit though since it sounds like you gave yourself a blood blister. I tore the corner of my thumb up when I started doing up and down thumb techniques, both with slapping and sweeping. Mostly this kind of stuff will toughen up and callous but getting blood blisters under the nail would mean you are hitting the nail hard on the string.

I think it would be pretty hard to wear right through your nail though.
