Dunlop Jazz III's for me, with only about 1-2 mm of the tip exposed to the string.

Dunlop Adamas 22mm Graphite... If they are good enough for Gordon, Anastasio, Garcia, Lesh.... they are good enough for me. They are actually the only pick I have ever liked.

After much experimenting, I settled on the Dunlop Tortex .50 triangle pick as my pick of choice when playing pickstyle on bass. I hate clackiness, and the Tortex picks have no clack whatsoever. And the flexibility means smooth playability.

I remember reading somewhere in one of these "what picks do you use" threads that there was a bass teacher somewhere who recommended using a thin pick for bass and a thick pick for a guitar. Thin picks for thick strings and thick picks for thin strings. That's what I like to do. My guitar pick is a stainless steel pick my daughter gave me for Christmas. Plays like a dream!

Everyone's has their own opinion on what feels right and sounds good. For me I have found the Dunlop Tortex 88's to be just right. When I play with a pick I have a fairly aggressive style so if I tried the nylon's or anything in the 70's they just flexed a bit too much and if I went heavier it started to feel like playing with a bottle cap or something and the metal ice pix though cool always had me worried about gouging my bass. I would suggest getting a range of picks from .5-1.5 of different materials and see what works for you...

I like the yellow Tortex and the gray nylons. Both work well for me. But the best pick I ever had was one of Trujillo`s I found after a Metallica show. Don`t know what it was - wish I did. I didn`t even know he ever used a pick, but it was waaay too heavy to use on guitar.

I use Dunlop Gator Grip 1.5mm, and like a previous posted said, the grip on them is fantastic. It doesn't bend or flop like thinner picks, which I think is great because there's no excess racket. It also gives a fuller sound because it hits the strings harder. No clacking, or at least I've never had to deal with that. Love those picks, been using them for years, and are probably going to use them exclusively for a while.

Clayton U.S.A 1.00mm.
Love the size.
And you can use all the corners so it'll keep good for a long time.

Crank the cables as low as possible and get the thinnest thing you can find.

I usually use Dunlop picks but have never tried the Dunlop Tortex. I'll have to give them a try.

.73 Dunlop Tortex are fine for some snap and bite, but usually I like a deeper sound and lower attack. Also I want to be able to slam the strings hard sometimes without the pick giving. Those traits combined with the beveled edge for lack of click turned me on to 1.2mm (Green) Gator Grips. When playing with a pick, to me it's hard to beat that woofy attack of those picks.

I hate the clack, too, so I have some that I cut from bondo spreaders from the hardware store (I think they're delrin). Nice taper, and I can custom shape them for gripping comfortably.
If I want a heavier attack, I actually do love those thick felt picks. They give me a nice raw sound with roundwounds on a semi-hollow bodied bass, and a solid feel on flats.

Green Dunlop tortex .88 shield, Clayton .80 shield. Shields always face the right way no matter how you grab them.

I use Dunlop Gator Grips. 0.96mm is my preferred thickness but if I can't find them I use 1.5mm. Like the other folk that use them, I love them. I can get a really nice tone out of them, and they're really comfy.

clayton 1.52 triangle "tater diggers". the only reason you have to replace them is because you lose them. i have one that is 6 years old now.
