I've never used anything on the bass to change the sound. It does help to be very precise and to have a lower setup.

Strings, setup, pickup configuration, technique, and so many other things factor into getting a clean tapping tone.

I don't see how putting anything specific on the head will change anything. You just need the right bass and the right skills.

He's talking about a hair scrunchy to help dull the strings and prevent excess noise. Those can help some, but if you have a really decent setup and if you have good technique you really don't need one.

+1 It may sound silly but it makes a huge difference.

Exactly! I'd hate to lose the clarity and dull out the harmonics.

I embrace the noise and clangy-ness. I know my technique is poor, but I actually rather like the sound.
