clicking sound when fingerpicking

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys!

I am playing the bass for a few months now, and I like it!

Slapping Popping and playing with a pick gives no problems at all, but when fingerpicking.... arghh....

The problem is:
When I fingerpick the E string on a single note its okay, but when I switch notes on the E string and pick them with my fingers, there is this weird "click" or "pop" sounding through the amp.

It is also there when I pick very softly. I tried adjusting the neck, pickup heigt and action but nothing works so far, so I guess it is my technique.
Fingerpicking all other strings works well.

The sound goes away when I turn down my tone at the guitar, but I don't think thats a good solution

So please, help me!

How long are your fingernails? Either that or maybe the string is hitting the polepieces on your pickup... All I can think of.

My fingernails are cut, I somehow have the idea that the string it hitting on the last fret.... could that be?

Could be strings hitting the pickup polepieces.

That's possible. Just try raising the action a bit.

It seems odd that it only occurs when you play soft
bad technique causing pops is usually a case of plucking fretting too hard.

Is it possible the noise is always happening , just buried by more aggressive playing?

only when you switch notes On the E string?
only when you pluck?

what if you switch notes and don't pluck?
(if so, you could be fretting too hard)

Is your amp decent? try another amp or headphones ect and see if it's that.

I have experienced the same thing. My fingerstyle tends to make the string vibrate horizontally instead of vertically (if that makes sense) when I pluck the lowest string (B in my case). On certain basses this creates a clicking type sound and sometimes worse because the string hits the pickup polepieces.

Im not slap/popper but the little I do slap doesent create this sound.

On some basses the amount of action doesnt matter and on others I barely get the sound at all (depending on the pickups, shape, action etc of the bass I guess).

The one thing I usually do is to rest my thumb on the pickup closest to the bridge (all my basses have two pickups). That way the string wont vibrate as much when I pluck. I also try to play softer which also helps but I prefer to play hard so adjusting the string action can help.
