Cliff Burton "For Whom The Bell Tolls" Live Intro (Youtube content)

Sign in to disble this ad
Yay, another Metallica/Cliff Burton thread!

Can anyone tell me exactly what he's doing at 0:39 seconds in this clip from the Cliff em' All video? Pretty sure it's a trill/hammer on, but for some reason this has thrown me off for years.

Pretty sure it's a hammer on, but the effects really accentuates the way it sounds. Everyone downs Cliff because they say he has sloppy technique or his tone wasn't top notch, but the mp3's of him live proves otherwise. I always love that intro, as many times as I've watched it it never grows old. That dude had a helluva lot of energy.

Nope, it's been said time and again.

You get a better idea of what he is doing at 0:55 IMO.

Try a hammer-on/pull-off to open string triplet on each string and see how that works out for you, and watch when he hits the A string. He sure liked his open A when soloing...

Honestly though, with enough muff and scooped mids I got away with just rooting both fingers and skipping between the high notes . The key words there are "got away with" of course.

I'm assuming that LLink is referring to "everyone downs cliff" since it's bold.

I have to agree with ZanaZulu807 because a lot of people on here think he's sloppy and say other crap about him.

Cliff is awesome, BTW.

Compared to the rest of the world, that is hardly the case.

The rest of the world are not Bassists and have no idea there is a bassist in Metallica. LOL J/K of course.

He has a very Hendrix-like appeal to most people.

Decent musician who flailed around wildly while playing and died just as they were entering the public spotlight.

I actually enjoy Jason's feel and Sadowsky sound more then Cliff's. I know, its a blasphemy, but there is something about his down-to-earth, simple yet effective approach, and generally his whole attitude, that just appeals to me... Would love to get a chance to meet him one day..

FWIW - just use the same notes that the original does and chuck in some bending and trills / pulloffs whilst having muff and wah cliff got the emphasis of a solo right, cos I don't think he ever played that intro the same way twice live!

or you can go and do jasons version of that intro and just bash your head into your bass with muff and wah going nuts hahaha
*me hearts jasons craziness*

Yeah, he's doing a hammer-on/pull-off flutter.

It's not blasphemy, Cliff was mainly a solo man with some unique ideas. Jason is a superb bassist who didn't get the respect he deserved. Who knows what great ideas he had before Hetfield and that poor excuse for a drummer shot them down. I also dig his Sadowsky tone, his tone on S&M Ktulu is the shizznit.

i think that part just depends on your effects and doing pull offs. my band played this song and i didnt do that little part because its almost impossible to get it to sound like that. i think its mostly in the effects. his wah/fuzz pedal is quickly dissapearing on eBay, but its too expensive for me. clff is a great bassist, in his short-lived music career he accomplished so much.
