Okay, maybe it's not the correct order but hear me out guys.
I was playing today and I decided to focus on removing noises that come along with my playing as much as possible. Well, I decided to play REAL slow two the D and the D# on the A string until I've realized something. It's the plucking hand who should do the most muting on the bass so I deconstructed the motion of the plucking.
I've come to the conclusion that the best to get rid of the noises I was talking about previously is the following:
1º Rest lightly the plucking hand finger on the string
2º Fret the note you want to play lightly
3º Pluck with the plucking hand finger!
The thing is, this process must happen in a split second!
You should have a system that employs both hands, but could do most of the work by itself if you only had one hand to use.
Do you dig in a lot when you play? If you play with as light as a touch as you can on your plucking hand, your system isn't necessary since there shouldn't be enough of the finger on the string to make outside noise.

Higher strings with left hand, lower with thumb & plucking motion (rest stroke), ring finger and moving your thumb when playing more on higher strings.
