Not sure if this is the right forum, but it IS a technique.

Here's something to try: point a remote control at your bass pickups and press a button. You might have to turn your volume up to hear anything.

It's a UFO everyone! Run!

James Iha from the Smashing Pumpkins did that with a toy lazer gun. He did it while wearing a space helmet.

Also Steve Stevens (who used to play with Billy Idol) often uses some similar gadget to make his guitar sound like a UFO. It's a cool effect to throw in on occasion.

I'd say it's more of an effect, like an eBow...
