Today I was surfing Youtube watching Mark King videos when I ran across this guy's clip showcasing his slap skills. I REALLY need to practice more..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4HnTSYvJWc

The best slap bass video I've ever seen (and the only one I've personally bought) was The Slap Bass Program with Alex Sklarevski. It looks like this guy borrowed the weird right hand "spider" technique from Alex's video.
Here's the last segment of that video where he talks about more "out there" techniques. Slap Bass Lesson. |

| | | | No groove, wankfest, amazing technique, very articulate fingers, but this guy will lose the ability to use his fingers in about oh, 3 years of doing this crap.
Seriously, his technique is pushed really far, but he needs a serious lesson in groove. Choice of note was pretty awful too. |

That second video, Patrice Guers, was pretty rockin' till about 1:10, into that double-thumping thing, then went back into groovin'... I think if he stayed away from the excessive stuff, I'd like him a lot more.
(Of course, "excessive" is subjective, but I mean in particular the double-thump) |

Do you feel that?
Technique is great for a one man masturbration band, but only works by oneself ( and impressing folks at Guitar Center). His speed blows mine away, for sure, and guess what... dont matter none at all. Not cracking on him, or his abilities, but on the piece itself. Too fast to feel. We call that wanking.
SC, proper slap bass should sound VERY percussive. It should give a distinct beat, that is the whole point.
Check out buzzjohns on the TUBE. Get some "feel".
This piece is more into impressing with speed. True, permanent impressions come with FEEL. FEEL is your cognitive center kicking in.
If it dont smell like funk......

...... | If I walked into an audition and started going off on that stuff, I'd be pummeled with rotten vegetables, sweaty male undergarments, empty beer bottles and dirty ashtrays... |

| | | | Yep, Patrice Guers didn't really do it for me either although, IMHO again, he's on a whole other level than the first guy. |

| | | | i thought that was pretty cool. certainly, as he progressed, he didn't maintain the same sense of groove, but so what. i don't think his intention was to try to groove. obviously he's trying to show what he's technically capable of doing on his instrument. that second video of his, where he has lessons 8-12, was also ridiculous; though i don't think he can actually qualify those as lessons... seriously, who is going to learn anything from those videos? but if he actually tapped out bach's fugue in e minor, like the picture implies(on his myspace), i am going to have to learn how to spray my brain all over my living room wall.

When he switches to triplets there's always a little hiccup before it locks in. Like I said, I couldn't do it without practicing nothing but slap tecnique for a year- then maybe- MAYBE. It's hard to do anything that fast and really have a great feel, I suppose. Not to mention good tone...
I did see the other videos from the same guy and have to say that some of it is very cool and innovative technically. That's not what I want to sound like either but there is something to learn from it.
What I really liked though was his "little bass" video. if you didn't see it check it out. It's something very unusual and a really cool sounding. I soooo want to go out and buy one of those. Does anyone know what that is? Practically an electric bass ukelele!

This dudes got some serious chops, and I have no doubt that if he wanted to, he could play more relaxed and groove well. |
