Crooked Fingers?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have extremely crooked fingers, and the more I play, the more I realize that it affects my ability to some extent. There are certain things that some people don't think about that are actually quite difficult for me to pull off. For instance, my pinkie is bent in such a way that I can only fret with the side of it.

Has anyone else encountered any problems as a result of quirks with their body?

My fingers bend inward also and I've never thought of it as a problem. Just practice things slowly and it won't be an issue.

I have a callous on the outside of my pinky too.

My toes are pretty crooked and like to get caught on the bottoms of futnature, making the more crooked.

Actually when it comes to my playing my pinky is very, very short and it does hinder the way i should be able to use it. With practice and forcing it to do things it doesn't like to do it's getting better.

Th index finger on my right hand (plucking hand) is 1/4 inch shorter than the index finger on my left hand (fretting hand) and it won't bend more than a 45 degree angle and I can't touch the palm of my right hand with it. All due to a couple of different table saw accidents when I was a carpenter/cabinet maker. It doesn't stop me from playing and it's been like that for so long that it doesn't bother me and I don't think about it much now. But sometimes during the last set of a long gig, if I want to take a solo when I get introduced, I have to keep it simpler than I would if the finger was in original condition. But keeping things simple is not a bad thing so I just have the drummer keep going with me and we whip it out and everything's cool. )-(

I cut off part of the end of my right pointer finger from a saw accident, and I learned bass on it. It's never held me back, except for the nail. It's shaped oddly and it hits the strings every once in a while. I have to trim it back like every other day to make it not hit the strings and it's just too much of a hassle. Nowadays I only trim that nail before practice.

I bite my fingernails, I have for years. Because of this, my fingers when bent don't line up straight.

Fortunately, it hasn't stopped me from playing.

My pinky also turns in a bit and I also can only really fret with it on the side.

I'm glad you thought to ask this. I am very new at this and was wondering if it was going to prevent me from being able to effectively play.

I'm guessing not.

Cheers!

I have arthritis in all of my fingers, and other joints in my body, and most of my fingers are crooked. To me ... this is simply something to overcome rather than worry about.
