Dead Notes songs

Sign in to disble this ad
Could any body tell me some songs that use a good amount of dead notes in the bassline?
I've been wanting to pick up on this technique some, and need some examples and also stuff to play with

Also, any songs with good blues?

Here's a great song that will cover both bases..."Memphis Soul Stew" by King Curtis.

Come On, Come Over - Jaco

The clip doesn't get to the part you need to hear; but as a bassist, you should own this CD anyhow.

Yeah, Jaco is really good. I plan to buy that CD when I get the money!
So any more suggestions?

Any songs with a good amount of dead notes to work on,
or some good blues.

try 'In France They Kiss on Main Street' by Joni Mitchell as played by Jaco on the album 'Shadows and Light'... that's a dead note fest:

You might enjoy "Hot Fun" by Stanley Clarke off of his "School Days" album. Not much of a tune, just a little rock-fusion riff but is up tempo and features Clarke's awesome dead note technique. Also features Steve Gadd and David Sancious

ghost notes

Another Jaco tune with +++++ ghost notes is Barbary Coast and it can be found on Weather Report's Black Market album. Lots of slap ghost notes in Stanley Clarke's Silly Putty on a RTF album. Lots of pop ghost notes on the G string on Louis Johnson/ Brothers Johnson tunes. Happy Ghost/dead notin'!

Much of Michael Manring's work makes use of ghost notes to one degree or another.

Try his excellent CD with guitarist David Cullen called "Equilibre'" - specifically the tunes "Snappin on Ten", "Tie-Dyed and Wide-Eyed" and "Homestyle"; also give a listen to "Shuffle In" and "Gizmo" on the same CD...

I don't know about internet/free videos, but a guy that I'm shocked hasn't already been mentioned in this thread - Rocco Prestia, has a fantastic video addressing ghost notes and ton of other techniques.

Here's a link to the Video Progressions site: Fingerstyle Funk

As for the technique, you are basically damping with your fretting hand and playing a note as normal with your right. Easy idea, but it takes some practice and some rhythm to integrate properly.

TheBigO is right: Rocco is Da Man!

And his video is one of the best.

On this video http://www.videoprogressions.com/qtC...1/p1_2a_hi.mov

A few times fingers both the E and the D simultaneously... that blows me away.

Another Clarke tune to mention would be "Basically Taps". Just a little bass/tap dancing duet piece to end the "If this bass could only talk" album, but it features a lot of dead notes and really helped me to perfect my technique for getting them to sound "right".
