Death to the buzzing frets

OK, I have an old (and borrowed ) 5-string Samick bass and in about 6 days I am going back to school and will be layin down the groove for my school's band.

Unfortunately, the E string on my bass (and the Lower D string when Im playing pick) buzzes like crazy. So far the only way I've found to stop this is to play extremely softly with my fingers and crank the volume. I am sure that I am not causing the noise because while playing different basses at shops I never have any buzzing problems.

So, what can I do about this? I'm pretty sure I need to take it to a shop to have it re-set up properly but my parents are dead set against that idea beacuse it isnt my bass and they think it costs $50+ dollars just to look at the bass (Please tell me that they got a load of bull from someone)

(Disclaimer:I want to get my own personal bass but they say
I have to have a year of lesons first... If they'd just let me get my own all these problems could be avoided completely.....)

Time to do it yourself, it's not hard.

Thanks. I'll see what I can do.

I just got that problem on my new fretless, the Badass II bridge is still adjusting to the stress of the strings and needs to be raised, I could fix it myself but those bridges use a slightly smaller allen wrench than what came with my other basses for the bridge, and I don't feel like tackling my incredibly messy garage for my dad's full kit of allen wrenches until the sun's up, I don't want to know what could get in or out.

Try slipped some thin plastic or a few thickness's of paper under the strings into the nut slot. That should raise the string enough to fix the rattle.
