Check out Between The Buried And Me, none of their songs have ridiculous lyrics about death, they also don't have long hair, and don't dress in all black, or really fall into any metal stereotype, they have great compositions, and are also able to switch from being incredibly heavy to very soft and melodic in a flash. definately my favourite metal band.

Is it still Death Metal if it's not about death?

Between The Buried And Me is not considered Death Metal even though they might have "death metal" vocal parts at times.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=i38m-xGX7io not about death, however this may even be the band where the genre got it's name. think about it

I've always treated Death Metal as a style of music, not necessarily a lyrical style, as El-Bob above posted the band Death, possibly one of the forefathers of the genre didn't really sing about death at all.

admittedly a lot of the genre does focus on the morbid but it is not exclusive.

but than again btbam covers a lot of ground. and I think death metal is one of the genres they put into their music.
I don't think genres are really based on their lyrics. death metal has a certain feel to it, that sets it aside into it's own genre.

I've been experimenting with three finger plucking for about 2 years now. but I've never felt comfortable using it full time in my playing. I usually play with two, and get great speed with them. but I do use 3 here and there if I need a bit of a boost for fast triplets or to add rolls in for some rhythmic affect.

Okay so I really wanted to say thanks for all the kind words from everybody. I'm really glad that I was able to be of some help.

I've gotten a few requests for some expanded info and other stuff so here's what: Some time in the next few weeks I'm gonna get together with Eric Langlois from CRYPTOPSY and do another in-depth post with his collaboration, most likely regarding speed building exercises and his (*amazing*) input on rapid switching between styles such as 3-finger plucking and slapping on the fly.....

Thanks again, and special thanks to El-Bob

Amazing read, Pablo. And just in time, as I may audition shortly for a black/death metal band or two. Though I'm allegedly "retired". It'll be good to get the blood flowing again after years of classic rock and blues. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Did my first run through the speed-building technique and I got to 400 bpm before things got too loose - we'll see how I'm doing in a week. I'm interested to hear what tempos some of you guys are achieving
