Detune E string to C#

I play a 4 string G&L L2000 series. I detune it to record, but I am thinking about getting a 5 string. Is there an advantage either way?

If you buy a five string, your lowest string won't be flopping in the breeze. That's one advantage I can think of.

You can detune your E down to a C# if you use a .120 string. Tuning it up to E might feel a little tighter than you are used to, but when you drop tune down a minor 3rd, it will respond well.

Oh, that C#. I thought you meant the one an octave below it. It should be playable, but expect a different tone. I'd probably tune my other strings down a minor third as well to keep the tone even.

Is it possible to put "5 string" strings (the lower 4) on a 4 string bass? This seems like it might solve my problem

Check the "strings" forum, there's a thread on this topic.

Yeah, you can tune your four-string bass to BEAD using a 5-string set
