developing 3 finger fingerstyle technique

Sign in to disble this ad
i have been playing bass for about 2 years, mostly 2 finger fingerstyle, and i am now trying to get a 3 finger fingerstyle technique down. What is the best way to practice and develop this? Also, should i do a 3-2-1-3-2-1 technique or a 3-2-1-2-3-2-1-2? Any help would greatly appreciated.

This is just me, but I always start with my index finger, then ring, then middle etc. I've tried a 3-2-1-2-3-2-1-2-3 pattern, but after so long of doing 3-2-1-3-2-1, it's tough to make the change. It's all about what's comfortable. I'd say just practice with a metronome to really get it down pat.

Whatever you can do comfortably and play in time is OK. There IS no consensus on what is correct. I use 3-2-1-3-2-1 on real fast stuff, but otherwise I just do whatever feels natural.

There are guys who swear on one sequence or another, to me the most important thing is having the strength and confidence to use that third finger in whatever way works for you.

I do 3-2-1-3-2-1. Ring Middle Index, that seems to be the most natural motion
